I can’t drive 55!

In 1974 the feds passed a law making the speed limit 55 in all of the US. Lets take a tedious journey on the legal authority for this.

The citizens have the power of self determination.

The citizens authorized State constitutions.

The States created a system of voting and districts.

The States facilitated voting on representatives to State senate, house and Governor.

The citizens elected members of those three branches of State government.

The State joins the American Union by ratifying the US Constitution.

The citizens and/or the State vote in representatives for the Federal House, Senate and President.

The feds pass a law limiting the speed limit to 55 in all States.

Since the feds have no constitutional authority to do this, they add the law to a highway funding bill so that States will not get federal funds unless they pass a 55 mile an hour speed limit.

States pass the 55 mile an hour speed limit.

Sammy Hagar sings I can’t drive 55 so we have something to sing along to while we are going 115 in our 1970 Pontiac Firebird in a 55 zone.
